All about Fish Medications and Aquarium Maintenance
Once you decide to get into a fishkeeping hobby, you have to be prepared because it is not an easy job. There’s more to fishkeeping than buying and setting up a fish tank, adding fish and plants, and feeding your aquatic pets. The greater task lies in aquarium maintenance. And even if you perform regular aquarium maintenance, there is still no guarantee that your fish won’t get ill or injured. This is where fish medications come in.
Tips on treating sick fish
Part of good aquarium maintenance is checking, on a daily basis, the condition of the inhabitants of your aquarium. Are they active? Do they have a good appetite? Are there no discolorations, wounds, or signs of any injury? Once you spot something unusual in behavior and appearance, you need to attend to this immediately to save the life not only of the sick fish, but of others as well. Infection can spread inside your fish tank and the other healthy fish can get sick too, if you don’t act immediately.
Fish medications are available on your local pet stores and marine depots. You can even make online purchases. If unsure what to buy, you can always ask help from experts. Buy only from stores you trust. Make sure the ingredients of fish medications are written on their labels. Some chemicals may be harmful not only to the aquarium setup and its inhabitants but also to your skin. So make sure you take precautionary measures when administering fish medications, and give only the right dosage.
There are fish medications, such as Methylene Blue, that you can add directly to your display tank to rid of fungus infections. However, in most cases, it is better to use a separate quarantine tank to treat sick ones for about ten days before putting them back on your display tank.
