Controlling Your Bat Problem

Bats, although an ally to humans, are a health hazard that can cause significant harm. Bats can carry the rabies virus; bats transmit the virus to humans through bites. The risk of actually getting rabies from a bat bite is somewhat low, but rabies is a deadly virus and it’s not something that you want to mess around with. The rabies vaccine consists of a series of very painful shots, usually five in number, with its own set of side effects. Exposure to bat feces (known as guano) can result in a respiratory illness known as histoplasmosis. And bat mites, which are tiny little parasites that feed on bats, much like bed bugs, can bite humans, just like dust mites. If you’ve got a bat living in your house, then you need to call in a bat control professional to avoid any of the above problems.

Bat control is two-step process consisting of removal and clean up. First of all, is highly recommended that you contact a bat control specialist rather than trying to remove your bat infestation yourself. Contacting a bat control specialist will ensure that the bat is humanely treated while protecting your property. Some species of bats are endangered, if you kill a legally protected bat, you might find yourself facing a large fine. Bats are creatures of habit, and they tend to return to the same area to nest year and year. The bat control specialist will inspect your home for gaps to see where the bat or bats may have gotten in, and if needed, the specialist will fit your home with special traps that will allow any trapped bats to exit but not re-enter your home. The bat control specialist may even suggest that you build a bat house to replace a lost bat nest so that you retain the benefits of the bats.

After a few days, the bat specialist will return to your home, reinspect your home, and begin the clean up process. If the bats have been in your home for a long period of time, you may have significant structural weakening from bat urine. Bat guano may need to be removed. If there are large quantities of guano present, then the bat control specialist may need to bring in an industrial vacuum with a special air filter to prevent histoplasmosis spores from getting into your ventilation system.
