Instructions for Staining Your Deck
If you were to ask a few people around you what the best deck stain is, chances are that you would get a few different answers. You may have your own opinions about whether to use a solid versus a transparent stain, but that all has to do with personal preference. When choosing a deck stain, it really all comes down to quality. If you choose a stain that is not going to penetrate deep into the wood, it will not last very long. So, when deciding which product to buy, do not be stingy about the price. You will always get exactly what you are willing to pay for.
Before you get started on your deck staining project, there are a number of things that you should do to prepare. You should always clean and prep the wood first, even if it is new, as it will ensure maximum stain performance. You should also be sure to use biodegradable wood cleaners, strippers, and brighteners. And, always be sure to take precautionary measures, such as wearing protective clothing, covering up electrical outlets, and closing any doors or windows that are near the area that you will be working in.
Before you begin applying the stain, make sure that the wood is dry enough to absorb it. You want to be positive that the stain will penetrate the wood properly. While applying your decking stain, you should start with the verticals, and end with the horizontal surfaces. The floor of the deck should always be applied last, (so you aren’t walking on the surface that you just finished staining). It is also best to apply the stain with the grain of the wood, from end to end, of each deck board. You should never stop in the middle of one board and let it dry, because it may cause overlapping. Apply the stain evenly over the entire surface, and make sure to wipe up any puddles that have not penetrated into the wood after an hour.
When you are finished staining the deck, you should remember to avoid walking or setting the furniture up on it until the wood has completely dried. The final wood stain color will depend on how old the wood is, what type of wood it is, the application of the stain, and your preparation (cleaning) of the wood before you started. If you follow all of these tips, you should have a very successful project. Enjoy yourself!
