Not all deck stains are created equal
There are many deck stains on the market these days. You can change your wood color to any color you would like. The first step is to decide what color you would like to stain your deck. If there is previous stain on your deck then your color choices may be more limited. You should test the decking stain in an area that is inconspicuous before staining your desk. Using the best deck stain will make your job a lot easier. Make sure that you have the amount of stain needed for your whole deck.
Now that you have picked your deck stain color, tested it out, and are ready to start staining there are a few tools you will need. Depending on the size of your deck you may want to use a sprayer. If your deck is a smaller deck you can use a stain sponge to apply the stain to the wood. If you are using a decking stain sprayer you should be very cautious about over-spray. Sprayers make a fine mist that can get all over things that you would not expect them to. You should make sure to wear protective clothing. You should wear a pair of gloves as well as old clothes that you do not care about getting stain on. Because of the fumes from the stain you may want to wear a mask also.
You should apply a full coat of decking stain before starting the next coat. Depending on what color you have chosen and the richness of the color will decide how many coats you should do. Make sure not to touch the stain while it is drying. You do not want to leave any marks on it. You should also be sure to follow all of the manufacturers directions on drying times between coats as well as a final drying time.
Now that your deck stain has dried make sure that you have reached your desired color. You may decide to stop at this point. You may decide to use a sealer over your decking stain. There are many choices of sealers as well. You can choose a matte sealer or you may want more shine on your deck. Once you have completely finished your deck you will be able to enjoy it for years to come.
