Tips for a Great Best Man Speech

Giving a toast is something you usually associate with stuffed-shirted old men.  You definitely never saw yourself in that role, particularly at your age.  And yet, here you are, faced with the daunting task of writing and delivering a best man speech and toast to the bride and groom.  Don’t be overwhelmed with fear or foreboding.  Just follow a few easy tips, and your speech will go off without a hitch.

First, remember that your primary purpose is to be a part of a very fun and joyful day.  You’re not up there giving a report on Hamlet, after all.  You will be talking about two of your favorite people.  Your job as a speaker is to thank the guests for coming, particularly the bride’s and groom’s parents, to say good things about the young couple, to pass on any messages from guests who could not attend, and to give a toast to their happy future.

There is no fault in being short and sweet.  Many nervous speakers fall into the trap of thinking that the longer they stand before the microphone, the better their speech will be.  In fact, a few simple words delivered well are infinitely more compelling than a rambling or stilted discourse.  Often, a bit of appropriate humor can go a long way toward easing your fears and breaking the ice with the wedding guests.  Remember, no one is judging you.  They simply want to join you in wishing all the best to the newlyweds.

Keep in mind that you were chosen to be best man because of the special relationship you have to the groom.  Take a little time to pat him on the back during your best man speech.  Compliment him on his excellent choice of marriage partners; perhaps tell the story of when you met the bride.  If you have any advice to give the couple on how to make their marriage a success, you may want to say a few sentences on this subject.  If you are unmarried, it might be best to leave such counsel to others.

The key to giving an effective best man speech is preparedness, brevity, and awareness of the mood the bride and groom want to promote.  Your audience is sure to listen with wrapt attention as you lead them in a demonstration of support for the happy future of the bride and groom.  If you can pull that off, you will have done your job well.
