Aquarium Water Heaters as Essential Fish Tank Equipment
To become a successful fish pet owner, you should select the right aquarium supplies to be able to create an environment or habitat wherein your underwater friends will live long and happy. One way to achieve this is to set up an aquarium with a consistent water temperature. In general, fish pets don’t like changing water temperatures. Any drop or increase in tank water temperature can cause stress to your pets, making them more prone to diseases. In a worst case scenario, a tank with a water temperature that’s too high can cause your beloved pets to die, either because of too much heat or the water is too warm that it can’t provide enough dissolved oxygen anymore to your underwater friends.
Because of the impact of maintaining consistent tank water temperature on the survival of your aquatic pets, it’s very important that you choose the right kind of aquarium water heaters. The following are some tips when choosing and using the right water heating equipment:
Use more than one water heater
With both small and large fish tanks it is a good idea to have more than one heater. Opt for two smaller aquarium water heaters to provide a heating system that’s less prone to heater failure. If one of the aquarium water heaters suddenly malfunctions and remains in the closed position, the temperature won’t rise as fast, giving you more time to recognize the problem before it gets too serious. The same thing goes when a heater suddenly gets stuck in the open position. Because there is another heater used, the water won’t drop down too quickly.
Equip your aquarium with a thermometer
Monitoring your aquarium’s water temperature is essential in keeping your fish pets happy and thriving. This is why attaching a thermometer on the inside or outside part of the tank is very important. You can either go for a classic thermometer with red alcohol if you want to place it inside the tank, or a digital one which can be attached on the outside part of the aquarium.
Choose from either a submersible or hang-on type of aquarium water heaters
There are basically two major types of aquarium water heaters — the hang-on type, which you can easily hang into the tank frame and can be partially submerged, and the completely submersible type, which you can place inside the tank. Whatever type of aquarium water heaters you choose, make sure to take note of the waterline mark. This mark indicates the part of the heater that should be completely submerged to ensure even heating.
