Buying Guide: Chests
It’s probably one of the most frustrating things about furniture. You do laundry, fold it neatly, and start putting it away. You pull out a drawer from your chest and it’s jammed. It can be so difficult to fix and it tends to immediately jump off the track the next time you pull it out. When buying bedroom furniture chests, make sure you take a look at the mechanics of the drawers. Buying a well made chest will save you lots of heartache and anxiety.
Next, it’s important to buy bedroom furniture chests in person. While buying online can be good for other types of furniture, it’s important to actually test each drawer before making the purchase. You also want to be able to touch and feel the materials and check for any dings or scratches. Be sure to take a look at the back of the furniture. Remember solid is best, but it’s acceptable for the back to be a particle board.
Next, know what you are buying. There are so many different types of chests. A bachelor chest is typically a low chest with three drawers. A bedside chest is usually purchased in pairs and sits to the left and right of the bed. It’s on the smaller side. Chest of Drawers is the standard language for any single row of drawers. They are usually taller than wide. Chest on Chest refers to stack-able units. Sometimes it’s referred to as a high boy. A dresser is another set of drawers used mainly in the bedroom but traditionally has drawers side to side and is more wide than tall. A Master Chest usually has a set of drawers as well as a door that hides more storage space. Some compare this to an Armoire.
It’s always a good idea to know a bit about what you’re looking for so that the salesperson knows they are dealing with a bit of an expert. Do your research, know what’s available and what you need and be hands on with your selection process. Chests shouldn’t only look good, but they should glide in and out smoothly and easily.
