Finding Support for Single Parenting

Even in the best of circumstances, it can be extremely hard to raise children successfully. Between school and social pressures and financial concerns, it can be downright impossible to keep up and end up with well adjusted adults when all is said and done. If you are dealing with single parenting, you have all these same concerns, plus the added pressure of being responsible for doing it entirely on your own. Feeling isolated is a huge concern for a single parent. While many people are lucky to be surrounded by family, others are not in close proximity, or don’t have good relationships with parents and siblings. In this situation, it is essential to find support while you navigate the treacherous waters that are parenthood.

The first thing to do is to find the support systems that you already have in place. If you have family that you trust and are supportive, that is fantastic. Even if your parents, siblings or grandparents don’t live close, you can connect via the phone or Internet. Use social networking and chat features to their fullest potential. However, try to keep these connections most active when your children are in bed, at school, or otherwise busy. They can quickly intefere with the bonding time and activities that will nurture your relationship with your children.

Also, keep an ear out for people that ask if there is anything they can do to help. While it can be difficult to reach out, give it a try. If you are unsure of the nature of the relationship, test the waters with a small request, like a listening ear. Also, whenever you are building a support system for single parenting, it is essential to bring something to the table. Nothing becomes more draining than a one sided relationship. Yes, it is hard to parent on your own, but your friends and family have lives as well, and you need to respect that.

Another good resource for single parenting is a support group designed to help people that are in the same situation as you are. This might take the form of an email list or a local playgroup. Either way, you should look for these resources and use them to help you get support and relief. These groups can help you with budgeting, time management and so much more. You may even find the perfect partner to swap sitting with.
