How Soon Can You Use Penofin Stain on a New Deck?

Many people get frustrated with wooden decks has they can be very difficult to maintain. Everyone likes a new looking deck but gets upset when the wood does not stay good looking. It takes less than a year to start to turn gray from sun damage. Actually, most of the water and sun damage is done to a new deck within that first year. But a deck stain like Penofin can prevent this from happen and can leave the deck looking new for years. There is an old myth that you should let the wood dry out for a year on a newly built deck. This is not true. What you need to be aware of is that most deck stains like Penofin should not be applied to wood until it has a moisture reading of less than 15%. If you stain a deck with a higher moisture count the stain will trap moisture in the wood which will cause the stain to fail prematurely. But with that said, it normally does not take new wood a year to achieve a 15% or less moisture level. Depending on the sun exposure that the wood gets, it can take only 3 or 4 months. It can then be checked with a moisture meter and if it is less than 15% it can be sealed with a good stain like Penofin. If the deck is mostly shaded it may take a few month longer, but waiting a year is typically too long and the wood can be harmed within that time.
