My lesson from my cousin’s funeral

There is one occasion that can be very sad and very happy at the same time. This is not a trick statement, it’s simply an observation about funerals. It’s obvious why funerals are sad occasions, but less obvious why they can be happy. Let me try to explain it to you the best way I know how – through a personal experience.

Last year, my cousin passed away at the young age of 36. I don’t have any brothers, so this cousin was the closest I had to a brother. We would do all sorts of things together when we were younger. We used to set tires on fire and roll them down the streets of the hilly town we lived in at the time. We would go put firecrackers in people’s mailboxes almost every weekend. And the most fun of all was when we made dummies filled with newspaper and put them in the middle of a road at the bottom of a hill. It was funny to see people come screeching to a halt, get out of their cars to see if the person was alright, then kick the dummy when they found out they had been tricked.

Anyway, as I was passing out the funeral programs at his funeral, I took some time to remember all the good times we had in years past. I was glad I had a good relationship with him. I was sad that he was gone, but the lesson I learned was that it is more important how we lived with a person than remembering their death.
