Preparing Your Deck for a Deck Stain

When it comes to maintaining a wooden deck there are a lot of questions homeowners have. Many of them are not answered correctly or honestly so it is hard to determine what is true and what is not. Some believe a deck can be pressure washed with water and pressure and then stained with a deck stain after it has tried. This can be done to say the least, and is quite often but all too often months later the homeowner is left scratching their head as to whey the new deck stain is fading away. What most people do not realize is that the wood surface preparation is just has important as choosing a quality deck stain. The best deck stain in the world will not perform as expected when it is applied on a dirty or unprepared wood surface. Water and pressure alone are not enough to clean a wood deck. Yes, it will be cleaner than it was but it needs to be cleaned completely before a deck stain is applied. Just like a kitchen floor needs prepped properly before new tile can be laid and just like drywall is prepped before it is painted. With almost any home project, the prep work is just as important as the final step. Wood should be cleaned using a wood cleaner followed by a wood brightener. Then the wood should be allowed to dry before a deck stain is applied. Follow these steps and you will get the most out of your new deck stain.
