Learning to Live in the Present

At one time or another almost everyone has heard the advice that they should live in the present. This may be intended as comforting advice we hear when we are consumed by regrets about the past or feeling apprehensive about what the future may hold for us. Alternatively, the advice to live in the present could be an admonishment when we are spending too much time looking back on happy times or looking forward to some rosy but uncertain future. Either way, the advice to live in the present is a reminder that our power to act and achieve exists only in the present moment and that most of our attention and energies should be focused on the present.

We may agree that it makes sense to live in the present, but it may be easier said than done. Worries or regrets can crowd in on our thoughts, making it difficult to stay fully in the moment. Many people believe it is impossible to train their minds to focus on and fully live in the present. However, with practice and determination they will find that they can be in control of their thoughts and direct their attention where they wish to direct it, instead of allowing their thoughts to be blown first in one direction and then another, like leaves in the wind.

Meditation is one way to train the mind to focus on the here and now. People who meditate regularly often report that it helps them gain mastery over their thoughts. When we begin to meditate we often find that it is difficult to empty our minds of chatter or focus on a mantra. By meditating every day, we eventually find it is possible to quieten our thoughts for longer and longer periods. People who can do this when meditating have achieved a certain amount of control over their throughts and this can help them in their daily lives when they choose to use that control to silence pointless fears and live in the present.
